Brisbane Summer

Alex Collister. Current location: Queensland, Australia.

They say the weather’s turning
but the sun is still a butcher,
slicing lips like slabs of meat,
watching as they bleed.
Tongues are no longer tongues
but sand-sculptures,
the air chiselling your tastebuds
from the inside,
leaving you gasping.
Stream joins stream
until they’re flowing downhill
past your elbows, fingertips,
hip bones, thighs.
Sweat beads twinkle in the light
like several pairs of eyes.

In the distance
you can hear the shriek
of the Currawongs
begging for shade.
